January 12 - March 24, 2013
|
James "Jim" Yarbrough is a unique original. Jim is both a precise professional and a masterful draftsman. He is inventive and constantly testing his chosen materials to achieve his desired effect. He simply goes about bringing to canvas a world he envisions and explores. He has painted the streets of Venice, dancers and musicians, fish, imaginings, history and myth, fantasy and diabolic conflict. All are executed with the skill and artistry of a very talented professional.

Thomas Arvid: Reflecting the Good Life
September 29 - December 15, 2012
In his museum debut, Thomas Arvid continued to astonish both art and wine enthusiasts with his monumental compositions that capture the delicate beauty of wine and the evocative pleasure of its consumption. Achieving widespread success with his iconic portrayals of the wine experience, Arvid has become synonymous with the art of living graciously. Arvid conveys in vivid detail one of the most enjoyable aspects of life — getting together with friends to enjoy good conversation over the perfect bottle of wine.
RED September 29 - December 15, 2012
Why would an artist choose to use the color RED in a work of art? Is the selection just by chance or has the artist chosen RED to convey an emotion or to direct the eye through the work? RED is a color that tells many stories. Power, energy, danger, love, happiness and excitement all come to life when RED is involved. When an artist partners RED with the elements and principles of art including line, shape, space, form, texture, movement, rhythm, unity, balance, emphasis, size and contrast, a work of art is created with feeling and excitement. This exhibition combines the contemporary works of art from MCMA’s Permanent Collection with installation artist Susan Cipcic, school aged children, works from local artists, and art collectors to provide our guests a fun and enthusiastic way to learn about the many facets of RED.

Homes and Heroes of the Civil War
& Gem City Photography Collection April 7 – September 9, 2012

Photograph by Jim DiVatale
Homes and Heroes of the Civil War is the second exhibition in a series presented by the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art commemorating the sesquicentennial (150 year anniversary) of the Civil War. Homes and Heroes of the Civil War combined Vaughan's fabulous collection of original Civil War Confederate images of Georgia soldiers and Georgia Military Institute (GMI) cadets with Jim DiVitale's black and white photography of Marietta's antebellum homes that each had a part in the Marietta's antebellum homes that each had a part in the Civil War History in our area. The common theme is that these soldiers would have seen and most likely visited these homes. Now the museum visitor gets to see our Homes and Heroes together again, 150 years later.

The Best of the Fred Bentley, Sr. Collection April 7 – June 24, 2012
The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art was pleased to present the Best of the Bentley Collections. Mr. Fred D. Bentley, Sr. has been a long-time supporter of the Museum in various capacities, and has generously donated to our permanent collection for many years. It was our honor to present this selection, which represents his extensive and amazing collection of landscapes, seascapes, still life, portraits and sculpture.
Bentley has been a scholar and collector of American art for almost 55 years. He focused almost exclusively on American art well before it was fully appreciated by most collectors of the fine arts. His collection began with a give from Mrs. Frey, his Sunday School teacher, but his first investment was a garage sale fine which proved, ultimately, to be a fake. His research of that painting and the interest it generated became his inspiration to continue collecting, ultimately investing in fine works of art by major painters and sculptors, but also in wonderful pieces by artists who are lesser know but important figures in the development of the American style. Bentley is particularly interested in works of art that fall into the Hudson River School genre of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
