Art Instruction for Adults

Beginning Drawing

Tuesdays, July 27- August 31, 2010
10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Learning to see is the foundation of learning to draw as an artist. In this class you will learn the logical steps to creating dynamic and realistic drawings by breaking down complex images into simple shapes, dividing the space within the shapes into light and shadow, and gradually building your drawing into an accurate representation of what you see. This class will focus on drawing from life and exploring how to translate three-dimensional objects into two-dimensional drawings.

Watercolor Painting

In this class, students will learn a variety of techniques and skills unique to the dynamic watercolor medium. Working from life, students will learn to gain control of watercolors and will focus on creating strong compositions and will master drawing and color techniques. This class is perfect for the beginner or the advanced watercolorist!

Each student will begin at his/her own level and improve at an individual pace. Weekly demonstrations will include both wheel and hand-building techniques along with surface decoration. Student will set individual, reachable goals and meet them.

Pastel Still Life Painting

National award winning pastel artist, Gary Baughman, will open your eyes to the possibilities in "Pastel Still Life Painting." In this class you will learn how to compose dynamic still life paintings from life. We will focus on proper lighting, materials, and techniques specific to pastel. We will also discuss unique issues such as pastel framing “do’s and don’ts.” Through individual assistance, group critiques, and instructor demonstrations, all students will paint works to be proud of. All levels welcome.

Plein Air Painting

Saturdays, October 16 - November 20, 2010

Learn the key elements of landscape painting with oils, with an emphasis on the 'plein air' approach. This class is structured to create an enjoyable and fast moving environment, with effective studio instruction as well as plein air painting at local outdoor locations such as Smith-Gilbert Gardens, Brumby Gardens, and the Marietta Square. There will be numerous demonstrations, and an emphasis on one-on-one instruction. Find out how the concepts of the plein air approach will help you learn rapidly and create exciting and impressive paintings. Some topics covered include: supplies, composition, landscape concepts, using value to create depth, color mixing, and brush techniques.

Open Figure Drawing

MCMA hosts figure drawing monthly in its first floor galleries. We will have a nude model in a variety of short and long poses. Dry Media only. Bring your own boards or easels.

Come inside and cool off this summer with the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art! Campers will use their creativity to make exciting art projects. This year, we are excited to add pottery to the art camp curriculum as well as a new camp for ages 12-18! All students will have the opportunity to showcase their works in a special children’s exhibition at the end of each camp!

Pottery Hand-building

for ages 5+

This class will focus on the exciting techniques of clay hand-building. Children will learn how to build, decorate and paint beautiful ceramic works of art. Great for all levels!

Parents and toddlers will spend the morning exploring, creating and making a mess. Children will create works inspired by our collection of art or a short story read in class.
